The world moves very quickly and one of the things that has become more important now than ever is media literacy. For example, The Onion is a satirical newspaper that has funny headlines that could be real, but are always a joke. Today, there are tens of Onion-type websites where people think that the headline is real and take it as truth. We need to encourage more people to question sources and that is something we teach in this class.
Just as much as reading is a part of the process in literacy, so is writing. We want to make sure that you are able to not only compose coherent and grammatically correct sentences, but also organize your ideas in an effective manner as well. People take it for granted that writing is a vital to your literacy as reading, but you are really not doing anything with what you read unless you can communicate it through writing.
